A three-vehicle pileup Sunday evening north of Hope resulted in the death of a 54-year-old woman from West Kelowna, police said Monday.
The three vehicles — a 2008 Toyota, a 2008 Ford and a 2007 International hauling lumber — were travelling south on the Coquihalla near the Zopkios brake check when they collided with one another and came to a rest on the roadway and shoulder, Lower Mainland District RCMP said.
The two occupants of the Toyota — a 66-year-old woman and a 67-year-old man from Langley — were both injured.
Two 40-year-old men from Kamloops who were in the Ford, along with a 54-year-old woman from the commercial vehicle, got out to render assistance. As they did so, a 2008 Chevrolet driven by a 62-year-old man from West Kelowna drove through the scene and struck the Toyota.
The two Kamloops men were able to jump to safety, but the woman was hit by the Toyota as her 59-year-old husband witnessed the crash.
She was taken to hospital in Hope, where she succumbed to her injuries.
The driver of the Chevrolet later turned himself in and has been co-operating with police.
"Primary investigation reveals that it was snowing at the time of the collision which may have been a factor to this collision along with driver inattention," Sgt. Peter Thiessen said.
