A Kamloops man who slammed a woman's head against the wall as her three-year-old son watched pleaded guilty to assault and mischief Monday and was sentenced to four months jail.

The incident took place at 5:30 a.m. Sunday at an apartment in the 1700 block of Brunner Avenue.

Jeremiah Miller, who was wanted on a Canadawide warrant for parole violation, had been visiting a "former female acquaintance" when an argument turned violent, Staff Sgt. Grant Learned said.

"The suspect is alleged to have assaulted the woman after he kicked in the door to her bathroom where she had sought refuge from his ongoing aggression towards her," Learned said.

He twice stopped her from fleeing.

The woman reported being choked and having her head smashed into a wall. Her toddler came out of his bedroom and witnessed the attack, police said.

The man fled after the victim bit deep into his hand, leaving a trail of blood behind him. He grabbed her cellphone before leaving.

Neighbours alerted police after hearing screams for help, and officers set up a perimeter. The man was arrested in the 800 block of Newman Street.

"He had initially attempted to flee on foot from the tracking team but he had slipped on the ice and decided to surrender just as the dog and the dog handler were approaching," Learned said.
