Man in custody after overnight standoff ends in Vernon

VERNON — An almost 11-hour stake-out by Vernon RCMP has ended with a man taken into custody.

The incident started at around 6 p.m. Thursday when a woman called Mounties to report her drunken boyfriend had arrived at her home, and she feared he might hurt several puppies in the house.

Sgt. Dan Wendland says the first officers on the scene called for backup to negotiate with the man, in his early 40s, because he refused to come out of the home.

The girlfriend and a tenant had already managed to leave safely.

Things ended after 4:30 a.m. when the man was arrested without incident.

There's no word yet on possible charges.
