Brent Yamada’s Kamloops rink bowed out of the provincial men’s curling championship in Parksville on Thursday.

Yamada, curling with third Corey Sauer, second Doug Murdoch and lead Lance Yamada, had lost twice on Wednesday, before falling 6-5 to Abbotsford’s Dean Joanisse on Thursday. Because this year’s playdown is a triple-knockout event, Yamada has been eliminated.

After being blown out twice on Wednesday, Yamada kept it close Thursday. He and Joanisse were tied 2-2 after five ends, and 3-3 after seven. The rinks traded deuces in the eighth and ninth ends, before Joanisse stuck around on a hit for the winning point in the 10th end.

Jim Cotter’s Vernon/Kelowna rink has qualified for a B semifinal after winning twice Thursday. The Kamloops native beat New Westminster’s Jay Wakefield 6-1 and Vernon’s Mark Longworth 8-3.

The championship continues through Sunday. The winning rink will move on to the Tim Hortons Brier in Edmonton next month.
