Corryn Brown’s Kamloops rink can kick back and relax for a couple of days at the M&M Meat Shops Canadian junior curling championships in Fort McMurray.

The B.C.-champion Brown rink secured a spot in Sunday’s final with a pair of Thursday victories to wrap up the championship pool. Brown, who finished first in pool play, defeated Manitoba’s Shannon Birchard 13-6 Thursday afternoon, before edging Ontario’s Jamie Sinclair 11-10 last night.

They were two important victories, as Brown finished the round-robin 9-1, same as Birchard. Because Brown won yesterday’s head-to-head matchup with Manitoba, she goes straight into the championship final.

Brown, curling with third Erin Pincott, second Sam Fisher and lead Sydney Fraser, has won eight straight games after losing 7-6 to New Brunswick’s Jessica Daigle on Saturday. Brown’s latest victory, over Ontario, was a nailbiter, as Brown hit a double-takeout to score three in the 10th end.

“I’m so proud of those girls,” Brown said in a news release. “We had a couple of unfortunate ends and misses, but we made it through and got the three in the last end.”

Against Manitoba, Brown got ahead 5-2, and led 7-5 heading into the eighth end. Brown came through with six in the eighth, effectively ending the game.

Manitoba will have to play in Sunday’s semifinal. Brown and Co. will have to wait around until Sunday as well.

“I don’t really want to think about what’s at stake right now,” said Brown, whose father, Ken, coaches the rink. “I just want to keep focused on what’s right now. We haven’t won anything yet and we haven’t lost anything. We just have to keep a level head.”

What’s at stake is a chance to represent Canada at the world junior championships in Sochi, Russia, from Feb. 28 to March 10. A B.C. rink hasn’t won a women’s junior title since 1987, when Julie Sutton won in Prince Albert.
