    Sports Briefs: Bojesen wins in Richmond; Super League playoffs set

    Eric Bojesen won a pair of titles at an ITF sanctioned tennis tournament in Richmond on the weekend.

    Bojesen, in his first season of 70-74 age group play, teamed up with Vancouver’s Horst Dammoltz to win the round-robin doubles event. Bojesen also won the singles, winning back-to-back matches before knocking off Dammoltz in the final, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.

    It was Bojesen’s first tournament of the season.

    The South Kamloops Titans won a pair of weekend league games, and now are 9-0 in Okanagan senior AAA girls basketball action.

    The Titans beat the host Kelowna Owls in the opener — a score wasn’t available. Emma Wolfram had 30 points, 16 rebounds and nine blocks, while Maya Olynyk had 16 points and nine assists.

    Emily Vilac helped out with 10 points and six rebounds, with Anna Frenkel scoring six points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Emma Piggina also had eight points and eight rebounds, and Kanesha Reeves scored seven points.

    The Titans went on to defeat the host Kelowna-Rutland Voodoos, 83-38. Reeves was 4-for-6 from downtown and had 20 points.

    Wolfram also scored 12 points, with Vilac getting 11 points and six rebounds, and Piggin scoring 10 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Frenkel had 12 rebounds and eight points, as Olynyk also scored eight.

    The stage has been set for the playoffs to begin in the Sun Life Financial Super League at the Kamloops Curling Club.

    Scott Decap’s Hub International Barton Insurance rink went 15-2-1 to finish atop the 10-team league’s standings, completing  the regular season with an 11-1 victory over Kevin Ihlen (Tim Hortons/Coldstone Creamery).

    Darren Nelson (TRU Men’s WolfPack) needed a victory to hang on to second place and he got it, beating Grant Olsen (Grassroots), 7-2.

    In other games, Brent Yamada (Kamloops Office Systems got past Amanda Russet (Wrabel Brothers Construction) 7-5 and finished third; Rick Reimer (SMS Equipment) finished fourth after beating Mike Smith (BA Dawson Blacktop), 7-2; and, Bob Holden (KPMG) defeated Corryn Brown (Rivershore Ram) by forfeit as Brown was in Fort McMurray, Alta., winning the Canadian junior women’s championship.

    The first round of the double-knockout playoffs is scheduled for Monday, 9 p.m., with Decap meeting Olsen, Nelson taking on Holden, Yamada meeting Smith, Reimer playing Brown, and Ihlen going against Russet.

    The TRU WolfPack cross-country team had a good showing at the Starting Block 10K in Lavington, the first spring race of the Interior season, on Sunday.

    Four of the five TRU runners who competed placed in their respective age categories.

    Coach Jack Miller was first in the men’s 65-69 division in 44 minutes 11 seconds. Igor Pichugin was second in the men’s 20-29 age group, in 41:29, just ahead of teammate Francisco Canizal (41:33).

    In the women’s divisions: Jessie Paustian was third in the 20-29 age group (49:15) with Xena Dzubko sixth, in 54:60.
