Curling: Brown to get sendoff from KCC

On one of their last nights at home before heading to Russia, the members of Corryn Brown’s rink will get a proper sendoff.

The Kamloops Curling Club, the home rink for Brown and her teammates, is planning to hold a sendoff for the Canadian junior champions. The sendoff is scheduled for Thursday, 6-8:30 p.m.

That will be two days before Brown, third Erin Pincott, second Sam Fisher, lead Sydney Fraser and coach Ken Brown head to Sochi, Russia, for the world junior curling championships. The championships are to start Feb. 28 and run through March 10.

It’s only appropriate that the curlers will be celebrated after their fantastic run to the Canadian championship in Fort McMurray last week. Brown went 10-1 for the week — including a 6-3 victory over Winnipeg’s Shannon Birchard in Sunday’s final — to win B.C.’s first junior women’s title since 1987.

But there isn’t a lot of time for Brown to prepare for Russia, and there’s not a lot of time for the KCC to prepare for the sendoff.

Club general manager Paula Williams said Thursday that plans are still being made, but the club is hoping that the girls will be piped into the club and that a few dignitaries will be on hand to say a few words.

It’s shaping up to be a casual affair so guests can have the chance to talk to the girls during the evening. The doors will open around 5:30 p.m., with pulled-pork supper to start at 6 o’clock and presentations to begin around 6:45 p.m.

Although the details are still being worked out, Williams is hoping the girls will be presented their Team Canada jackets at the sendoff.

Tickets, which are going for $15, are available at the KCC or by calling 250-372-5432. Williams expects them to be a hot item.
