Overlander skiers strike gold in Cup and Loppet

Five Overlander ski club members won gold medals at the Teck Okanagan Cup No. 2 races at Stake Lake Trails on Saturday, and two more won medals at Sunday’s Overlander Loppet.

The races were the second on the Teck Cup series, with the finales scheduled for March 10 near Vernon. The first races were held near Salmon Arm on Dec. 30.

Hundreds of skiers took part in the Okanagan Cup 2, and hundreds more were at Stake Lake on Sunday for the Overlander Loppet.

Overlander’s Meaghan Bourgeois won the Atom Girls 1 900-metre classic mass start in the Teck Cup. She crossed the line in seven minutes 29.9 seconds, nearly a minute clear of second-place Romy Hansen, another Overlander skier. Hanneli Ladyman of the Overlander club won the Bantam Girls 2 2.5km classic mass start, racing to a time of 11:05.

Elizabeth McKenzie-Case also had a golden day for Overlander, winning the Junior Girls 1 7km classic mass start with a time of 14:06.8. The ageless Charlie Bruce took gold in the Masters men 60-69 10km race, clocking in at 24:41.2.

Tiffany Hornbeck of the Overlander club won the Masters women 40-49 10km race thanks to a time of 24:09.1.
Hornbeck also had a good Sunday at the Loppet, winning the 15km women’s event in 55:50.6.

Catharine Pendrel also picked up a gold medal on Sunday. The national-team mountain biker raced to victory in the women’s 30km race in 1:33:02.2.
