The art of lyrics: you decide what they mean, says 40 Sons frontman

    40 Sons

Song lyrics, even of the hard rock variety, have meaning. But 40 Sons frontman Mike Repic isn’t going to tell you what his are about.

The songs are personal, Repic told The Daily News during a phone interview for the band’s hometown of Hamilton, Ont. But what the 40 Sons audience takes from them is what’s important.

“I think, even if my words are relevant to someone else but it’s not exactly what I meant, then that’s great because people are getting something out of it,” said Repic.

Art, any form of art, is open to interpretation, he said. And it’s better not to influence others by saying what his lyrics are intended to mean.

“Any kind of art should analyzed and not told what it’s about,” said Repic.

There are a few songs on the band’s latest, self-titled, album where the meaning is on the nose. Repic hopes the rest will be enjoyed and interpreted as listeners see fit.

Kamloops audiences get the chance to hear 40 Sons on Friday, March 15, during a show at Bailey’s Pub on Eighth Street. They play alongside local rockers The Stars of Fiction.

Although 40 Sons — Repic, guitarist Mike Spik, bassist Link Andrews and drummer Cristiano Andreatta — have played B.C. before, Repic believes this is the bands first show in Kamloops.

He promises a lively set of music that includes tunes off the new album and from throughout 40 Sons’ eight-year history.

“We bring excitement back to rock and roll,” said Repic. “It’s not some guys going through the motions playing rock and roll. It’s dirty.”

This is 40 Sons first tour in a while. Repic said recording the album kept the band off the road for a long time. Usually 40 Sons spend seven to eight months of the year playing gigs.

The Baileys show is part of a month-long excursion to promote the new album. Repic said the band also plans to travel into the U.S. for the first time.

Here's an example of the lyrics:

My fist is clenched on fear, holding blood sweat and my tears

It's how I've been for all these years, I don't want this I don't need this

This fear has turned to rage, an animal locked in this cage

Another chance to turn the page, but I don't want this I don't need this
