Mounties fail to get man who 'slipped the net'

Police officers and an RCMP chopper converged around Athabasca Street West at about 4 p.m. Wednesday after getting a tip that a man wanted on an outstanding warrant would be in the area.

But this was one time that Mounties did not get their man.

"He bolted," said Staff Sgt. Dave Lucas. "He slipped the net."

The search went on longer than it would have normally because police received several tips, he said. The helicopter joined in because it was already in the air.

"Clearly, he must have hunkered down somewhere."

The man has a history of motor vehicle violations and is not a danger to the public, Lucas said.
