Bar flush solutions still in the works

Taxi stands being moved closer to bars in the hope that more people will use them

Designated taxi stands that were located to stop bar patrons from gathering outside after closing are not working.

So the stands are being moved closer to the bars, where customers can easily find them, City community safety and enforcement manager Jon Wilson said Monday.

The taxi stands were part of the initiative to prevent problems that occur when the bars all close around the same time downtown.

Shuttle service is also being explored by the cab companies and others, Wilson told the City’s co-ordinated enforcement task force.

Bar owners are also drafting a code of conduct they will post in their establishments that maps out the rules for customers, he said.

Police, bylaws, bar owners and taxi owners have been working together to try to solve the “bar flush” problem that sees mobs of people sometimes gathering in the streets after closing, and disputes occasionally breaking out or vandalism and other issues occurring.

A call for proposals for other options to dissipate customers after closing time didn’t generate any solid responses so it has been cancelled, he said.
