Victim of avalanche near Revelstoke identified as 24-year-old German

The victim of an avalanche near Revelstoke has been identified as a 24-year-old German man who had recently been living and working in the area.

The B.C. Coroners Service says Holger Achim Fritz was originally from Stuttgart.

Fritz was caught in an avalanche on Friday, while backcountry skiing east of the Revelstoke Mountain Resort.

He was among a group of three people who were buried when the slide struck near the Greeley Bowl.

The airbags of all three deployed, but Fritz could not be revived after he was dug out of the snow by others who hadn’t been hit.

Fritz’s body was recovered Saturday by a search and rescue team, and he is the second man from Germany to die in a B.C. avalanche in a week after a death on Feb. 19 near Invermere.
