A basketball coach can make a game plan for just about everything — except for a hot-shooting opponent.

That’s what Scott Reeves, head coach of the TRU WolfPack, found Saturday when his troops lost the second game of a Canada West women’s basketball quarterfinal series, 79-66, to the Calgary Dinos. The Dinos, who had won Game 1 on Friday, swept the series and will advance to the Canada West Final Four in Regina on the weekend.

Playing against the conference’s No. 1-ranked team, the WolfPack always was facing an uphill battle. But the Dinos shot the lights out on Saturday, and TRU had no chance.

“I don’t know what they ended up at, but they were at 50 percent from the field and on three-pointers for a lot of the game,” Reeves said Sunday. “They were going to the basket and getting easy layups. When we clogged up the middle, they kicked it out and made threes.”

The Dinos, who shot 50 per cent in the first half, ended at 48 per cent from the field and 40 per cent from three-point land.

It was the second straight first-round exit for the WolfPack, which never had made the playoffs before 2011-12.

There really wasn’t anything in the way of nerves this time, Reeves said, just one team making more plays — and shots — than the other.

“On (Friday), we played hard and competed,” Reeves said. “I think Calgary was excited to be at home . . . and that ended up being a home-versus-away thing. On Saturday, they just shot the ball extremely well.”

Jessica Franz, who started her career with the WolfPack, had 21 points to lead the Dinos, with Megan Schaufele scoring 16 and Tamara Jarrett and Ashley Hirons each scoring 10.

Diane Schuetze had 23 points and eight rebounds for TRU, and Jorri Duxbury had 11 points. Tracy Kocs came through with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

It was the final game for TRU’s graduating seniors Schuetze, a 6-foot-3 centre, Kocs, a 5-foot-10 forward, and

Jen Ju, a 5-foot-5 guard who had six points Saturday. The seniors started the entire season, and their departures will leave a big hole in TRU’s lineup.

“If I do my job right, I don’t look at it as a rebuild,” Reeves said. “We lost three kids last season and we got better. . . . Our young kids will just have to keep getting better and hopefully they can fill those roles.”

The WolfPack hockey team recorded a split at home.

TRU lost 6-4 to the Selkirk Saints on Friday, before defeating Trinity Western 4-3 in overtime on Saturday. The WolfPack has one game remaining in the B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League regular season — against Simon Fraser in Burnaby on Saturday.

Playoff-bound TRU (10-10-3) gave up two goals in the final 3:50 on Saturday. Tyler Jackson had a goal and two assists in the loss, and Scott Bollefer, Anthony Delong and Nathan Michaels also scored goals. Riley Wall and Shane Mainprize combined to make 27 saves.

Scott Swisten had a goal and four assists for the Saints, which got 29 saves from Alex Sirard. Beau Taylor had three goals, and Connor McLaughlin and Jackson Garrett also scored.

Delong scored the winner on a power play at 2:45 of overtime on Saturday. Alessio Tomassetti had two goals, with Rigby Burgart singling, Joshua MacDonald recording two assists, and Wall stopping 33 shots.

Matthew Ius, with two, and Mattias Schmitt scored for Trinity Western, which got 34 saves from Harry Fredeman.

The WolfPack baseball team wrapped up its spring training trip with a pair of victories over the host Langley Blaze on Sunday.

TRU had been in Arizona and California, and stopped in Langley on the way home.

The WolfPack won the opener, 6-5, with Regan Gillis pitching three scoreless innings for the victory. Starter Colin Vaughan went two innings, and Evan Douglas had two hits, two runs and two stolen bases. Blayne Halland had a double and drove in a run.

TRU took the second game, 8-3, with Landon Briscoe smacking two doubles, driving in two runs and reaching on a walk. Frank Fisico pitched three scoreless innings to record the victory, with starter Jason Tripp going two scoreless innings as well.

Brendan Reid scored two runs, drove one in and stole a bad, and Reid Flasch had a single, an RBI and a stolen base.
