Smoking tops list of infractions at transit exchanges

Verbal warnings about smoking around the two main transit exchanges downtown and on the North Shore topped the list of infractions City bylaws officers are finding.

Jon Wilson, City community enforcement and safety manager, said the second-most common issue is skateboarding, followed by biking, nuisance (swearing and yelling), spitting, alcohol and RCMP cases.

Lansdowne Village management has put up signs prohibiting skateboarding and smoking in part of the mall area and added security.

Bylaws staff park in the bus exchange area for higher visibility when they are on duty there as well, he told the City’s co-ordinated enforcement task force. Usually bylaws staff watch over the exchanges at the busiest time of day, from 2 to 5 p.m.
