I feel banning trucks from Highway 5A is a completely ridiculous action to take. What’s next? Kevin Krueger deciding to ban trucks from other routes? Would you ban trucks from taking the canyon or any other two lane windy route for that matter?

The stretch of Highway 1 through the canyon is equally if not more dangerous than 5A. There are many unnecessary accidents on all highways throughout the province whether single-vehicle or multi-vehicle. It has nothing to do with the road — it is the calibre of driver out there. Putting a scale on 5A won’t stop accidents from occurring. Many drivers take the route because the condition of the Coq at the time is poor, or simply to conserve fuel with today’s soaring fuel prices, not to escape the scale with an overweight load.

If you truly want to fix the problem, the only way to do it is to tighten rules and require a provincially recognized training course be mandatory. Let’s face it, there are many less than professional drivers out there.

Changing speed limits isn’t going to fix the issue because there are equally as bad drivers in cars and pickups passing in unsafe locations without care.

Let’s not be so quick to point fingers at the poor guy who drives the semi. There are many great drivers out there who are being (labelled) because of the less-than-adequate drivers we have let slip through the Class 1 training programs in our province.

Here is some food for thought — before you go changing speed limits and banning drivers from a particular route, Mr. Krueger, why don’t you or a CVSE officer take a day trip with a real professional and see what they deal with.

They aren’t all bad.
