MINI PROFILE: Matt Stanley and The Decoys answer "Who R You?"

A weekly feature exploring the many talented people in Kamloops

    WHO'S WHO
Matt Stanley, vocals and guitar (that's Matt at the front of the photo), Jarrett Boyetchko, lead guitar, Will Fehr, bass guitar, Sean Poissant, drums.

    THE BEGINNINGS
In 2006, I (Matt) began writing and recording what would become my debut release, 2008's The Life & Times, a six-song EP recorded at Small World Studios with producer Henry Small.

The single from it, Lookin' All The Time, received airplay from 98.3 CIFM, CBC Radio West and was featured in the compilation CD K-Comp Vol. 1, released by Kelowna radio station K96.3 FM. Another song Ichabod Crane, which showcased my more folk influence, also received radioplay on CBC, while the other songs also received airplay from 92.5 FM The X. It was shortly after releasing The Life & Times that I was contacted by drummer Rob Simpson and guitarist Jarrett Boyetchko.

They heard my songs and they were interested in starting a band. With the addition of a former school mate of Jarrett's, bassist Brandon Donovan, the Decoys were born. We played our first show on Nov. 1, 2008, at The Loft in Kamloops.

After the departure of Rob Simpson in 2010, we brought in our good friend and gifted musician Sean Poissant on drums.

A few months later, we were in Vancouver recording what would be our debut album, 2011's Stripped, Bare, And On Display. The first single, I Know, received airplay on 98.3 CIFM, CBC West, and 92.5 FM The X.

It was also featured on the compilation CD Feed The Soul: Music Makes Meals, with the money going toward the Kamloops Food Bank.

The second single, Modern Disaster, also received lots of airplay on 98.3 CIFM. We also contributed our own holiday song, The Greatest Gift, to the compilation A Very Vancouver Christmas 5, with the money going to the SPCA.

After the departure of Brandon Donovan in 2012, we brought in our good friend Will Fehr on the bass guitar.

We are currently in the beginning stages of recording our second full-length album here in Kamloops. We've played gigs throughout British Columbia and plan on touring quite a bit in 2013.

    DAY SHIFT

I teach guitar at Lee's Music. Sean is an electrician.

Jarrett is a graphic designer (he does our album artwork and posters) as well as sells cellphones at a kiosk in Costco. Will is a draftsman.

    FIVE YEARS FROM NOW

My main goal is to grow as a songwriter.

I want to continue to record a large body of music and tour as frequently as possible.
Ideally, I'd like to find an independent label that believes in me and this band. Being a huge, rich rock star is not a concern or goal of mine. I just want to bring my music to the people and write songs that move people. I will do this, no matter at what level, for the rest of my life.
