4.4-hectare grassfire burns at Ajax mine site

A grassfire at the Ajax mine site that grew to 4.4 hectares Monday morning was "person caused," but other than that it remains a mystery, Kamloops Fire Centre spokeswoman Kayla Pepper said.

An investigation is underway, but the fact there was no lightning means humans were likely the culprit, she said.

Three firefighters from the centre's initial attack crew drove to the area when a call was received at 11 a.m., but people at the site had it under control, she said.

Remaining snow also helped extinguish the fire.

Robin Bartlett, community relations spokeswoman for Ajax, said the fire was not near any buildings and there were no injuries.

She did not have information Monday on what caused the fire.
