Diane Schuetze of the TRU WolfPack women's basketball team has capped off her five-year career by being selected to the CIS All-Canadian team for a second straight season.
Schuetze, from Vernon, was honoured at the CIS awards banquet in Regina on Thursday. The CIS championship tournament opens there today.
"I was shocked when I heard I was chosen again," Schuetze, who will graduate this year with a bachelor of tourism degree, said in a news release. "It's nice to finish my career with another major award."
Schuetze led the nation in defensive rebounds (166) and total rebounds (248). She was third in offensive rebounds (82), third in rebounds per game (11.3), fifth in blocks (34), fifth in free throws (103-142), sixth in total points (391), sixth in field goals (149-269), seventh in field goal percentage (53.2) and ninth in scoring (17.8 points per game).
Schuetze's previous honours include being named to the CIS All-Rookie team.
"To be considered one of the best players in the country is something that I am very honoured to have happen to me," she said. "It's great to be recognized."
Justine Colley, a fourth-year guard from Saint Mary's University, was named the CIS player of the year, while Windsor point guard Miah-Marie Langlois was honoured as defensive player of the year for the second straight season. McGill forward Mariam Sylla was named the top freshman, with Scott Munro of Saint Mary's named coach of the year. Fraser Valley guard Alexa McCarthy got the Sylvia Sweeney Award, which recognizes excellence in basketball, academics and community service, and Wilfrid Laurier guard Amber Hillis received the Tracy MacLeod Award for determination and perseverance.
