A 25-year-old man who beat his mother with a pool cue at Christmas will spend another 38 days in jail after pleading guilty Monday.

Jaycee Folden pleaded guilty to assault with a weapon, assault and several breaches of court orders.

A psychiatric report found Folden is depressive, has anti-social personality traits and may suffer from fetal-alcohol syndrome disorder.

Crown prosecutor Carol Hawes said Folden's mother came to Merritt RCMP on Boxing Day to report two assaults. Two days earlier, she said Folden pushed her on the bed and punched her five times in the shoulder.

On Dec. 26, she reported her son attacked her with a pool cue, smashing it in the process. She suffered cuts and bruises. RCMP later found the broken cue.

Folden was arrested and released on bail. But he was discovered by police on two occasions in breach of a condition that he not drink alcohol.

Folden was jailed again in February after those breaches and served 81 days in custody awaiting sentencing. Judge Chris Cleaveley sentenced him to a total of 120 days jail on all the counts.

Defence lawyer Graham Kay said Folden comes from a dysfunctional family. His parents divorced when he was 12 years.

Cleaveley also ordered that Folden be bound by an order that he take medication for his mental health issues as prescribed by a doctor. If he fails to take medication or chooses not to, Folden must report that to a probation officer.

"This is the third or fourth time you've attacked your mother," Cleaveley said. "The last time you hit her so hard you broke the cue… . We all know you're not supposed to attack anybody, particularly your parents."

Once released from jail, Folden will be on probation with terms prohibiting him from possessing weapons, contacting his mother and drinking alcohol. He will also be required to take counselling as directed by probation officials.
