The odd case of a kidnapping accusation that turned bad for the accuser was back in court on Thursday.
Bradley Smith is facing charges of assault and mischief after capturing on video an altercation with a BC Transit driver last year.
He posted the video to YouTube with the title "Kamloops BC Transit Driver Kidnaps Passengers."
Smith, who is representing himself, began cross-examining the driver on the first day of trial last Friday.
On Thursday, he returned to court to set a date for another day of trial. He told the judge he is halfway through questioning the driver.
The case is not expected to resume for several months to allow Smith to prepare.
Outside the courtroom, Smith told media that he opted to defend himself because he has future career and political ambitions and the case would harm his name.
He said he has “absolutely no legal experience whatsoever” but he didn’t hire a lawyer because he has the smarts to present the case on his own.
“I know for a fact that I’m innocent,” he said. “I have the intelligence to prove it factually and I want to do that myself. I want to vindicate myself.”
