I just read in the paper that representatives from Domtar, Tolko, Lafarge and Arclin have written council asking to address the City’s annual financial planning workshop.
I have to seriously questions their motives — obviously they want lower taxes.
Well, if they are having a say, then so should I as these big companies are polluting the very air I breath in this city, causing many serious health issues and extra expense too many of its citizens.
They should not be given any tax breaks; maybe all the taxpayers who suffer from bad asthma caused by industrial pollution could be given a tax break (just a thought).
But I really don’t understand why big business should be given any extra consideration. Domtar met with City council privately last year to the company’s financial benefit. I find this all very distasteful and shady.
I believe council should be focusing more on how to stop any more big polluting businesses to open inside this community. If council wants to be kept voted in, it needs to stop having private meetings with big business and stay transparent, as it’s the taxpaying citizens that vote you guys in, not big business.
I never voted for any of these companies to represent me, I voted for the politicians, and I think they should all remember that.
