Regardless of one’s position in the debate over the proposed Ajax mine, Mel Rothenburger’s opinion column (Today’s Anti-Ajax Rally A Gamble, The Daily News, Sept. 12) was such a sophomoric attempt to ‘hype’ attendance at the rally, (presumably to create a newsworthy event), that it’s downright embarrassing.
Good editorial opinions are essential, and excellent ones have been immortalized, but not by creating dissidence just to milk a story.
In other words, report the news, comment on the news, but don’t create the news.
When in doubt, buy a Globe and Mail or National Post.
They don’t appear to want for leads or provocative commentary, (including rallies, riots, floods, fires, wars, and storms), and they do so, both literally and figuratively, without having to strike a match, open a floodgate, or even
fire a shot.
