It was great to read the snippet of news about the success of the Kamloops Rowing Club members at the recent regatta in Surrey (The Daily News, Sept. 18).
But the insignificance of the article in no way echoed the significance of the event to the rowers and the club.
In May, a small number of women read the advertisement in your paper about the beginning of rowing lessons at the Shumway Lake property.
A response of, “That’s something I have always wanted to do” united us all.
Under the tutelage of Janine Chan and Debbie, in evening light and morning sunrises,
we learned to balance those narrow hulls and those monstrous paddles and the end result was that the ones you mention completed their first race. Thirty-five minutes of non-stop full-on paddling.
It was a significant achievement and a challenge recommended by all the new club members to anyone who wants a new sporting challenge.
