A 29-year-old driver was found dead at the scene Wednesday night at about 11:20 p.m. after a vehicle left the roadway and overturned on Highway 5 near Inks Lake Road.
“Preliminary findings indicate that speed and alcohol were factors in the crash,” Cpl. J.T. Lyons of Merritt RCMP said.
The 2002 Ford F-350 pickup truck was travelling north in the passing lane when it drifted over onto the left shoulder in an attempt to correct, causing it to skid across two lanes and strike the cement highway barrier.
The vehicle jumped the barrier and rolled down a steep embankment several times. The driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle.
