The 22-year-old student who died Thursday near Surrey Lake in an ATV accident has been identified as Richard Cameron Davis of Coal Harbour, near Port Hardy on Vancouver Island.
He had been studying at the Nicola Valley Institute of Technology in the environmental resources technology program.
A group of students was finishing up a day of hands-on learning four kilometres down Surrey-Sussex Lake Road when two of them went for a ride on a quad owned by a student.
Davis was the passenger on the vehicle travelling east on the road south of Highway 97D, the B.C. Coroners Service said. The driver apparently lost control, hit a sign post and rolled down an embankment.
He died at the scene.
The female driver, also a student, went to Royal Inland Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
