A woman died in a two-vehicle crash early Tuesday morning on Highway 5 nine kilometres north of Avola, Clearwater RCMP said.
A southbound van crossed the centre line at about 1:30 a.m. and hit a northbound commercial tractor-trailer unit.
The 33-year-old driver died at the scene, while her 44-year-old husband was taken to Clearwater hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. He was later transported to Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops.
They were residents of Hinton, Alta.
"From preliminary investigation, it is suspected that the female driver of the van may have fallen asleep, prior to crashing into the commercial tractor-trailer unit," Cpl. Bart Doerr said.
Alcohol and road conditions are not considered to be a factor.
The names of those involved are not being released pending notification of next of kin.
