City Briefs: Fair-trade sale set to go on Friday

The annual Ten Thousand Villages sale of fair-trade crafts takes place on Friday, noon-6 p.m., and Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at Desert Gardens, 540 Seymour St. A non-profit program of the Mennonite Central Committee Canada, it offers artisans in the developing world sufficient income for food, education, health care and housing. Suited to personal and gift shopping, the sale features jewelry, books, CDs, food items and home décor such as rugs, baskets, vases, fine dishes and kitchenware.

Two visions confront one town

Imagine a Town with No Mine is the name of a talk to be given on Sunday by former mayor and Daily News editor Mel Rothenburger at TRU’s Alumni Theatre starting at 2 p.m. Rothenbuger, who led the Tournament Capital facilities project, will challenge the audience to compare a vision of Kamloops with a mine and compare it to a town with no mine. He feels that the city has progressively defined its sense of place and self over the past 120 years of incorporation. Tom Dickinson, TRU dean of science, will moderate the event, which is sponsored by the TRU Faculty Association. Admission is free.

Open house looks at Clearwater project

Organizers of a Clearwater quest in the Aviva Community Fund are holding an open house on their project to build support for the next phase of the competition. On Nov. 27, from 7-8 p.m. at Clearwater secondary school, the parent’s advisory council will show plans for an elementary school playground that would honour the legacy of Skye and Courtney Buck, the local couple who perished in a highway accident last fall. Success in the Aviva competition is determined in part by online voting. The next round of voting takes place Dec. 2-11. Anyone gets 15 votes in total and can vote daily for their favourite project while assigning remaining votes to other projects.
