The Western Karate Academy's annual two-day Kick-A-Thon that benefit's the Daily News Christmas Cheer Fund kicked itself out on Thursday evening.
The students kicked on the south shore on Wednesday and then finished up on the north shore on Thursday.
And when Jim Doan, the WKA's sensei, finished counting he admitted to feeling amazed.
"I just counted the total from the north shore Kick-A-Thon donations . . . a stunning $5,005!" he reported. "Not only that, but the adult student who raised the most money (one of the instructors at the academy) collected pledges from 90 different donors for a total of $1,000!"
Doan added that another instructor brought in $743, with another adding $400 to the pot.
"There were many examples," Doan continued, "of young students who raised hundreds of dollars for the fund."
According to Doan, the two nights of kicking raised $7,600, "but that is by no means a final total."
Donations will continue to roll in to the academy. And when all is said and done, Doan will venture into his counting room and get out his calculator. He also will make sure that all the coins are rolled, which is why he is so adored by the elves who work so hard to make the Christmas Cheer Fund the success that it has become.
"We aren't likely to match last year's record, but the total won't be too shabby," Doan noted.
Last year, the academy's students pretty much blew off the doors here when Doan walked in with a donation of $12,000.
As Doan concluded: "Now I know why I do this every year."
More than $2,800 poured into the Christmas Cheer Fund's coffers over the last couple of days, taking us within easy shouting distance of 20 grand.
That means that you should kick back and enjoy the weekend. Oh, wait! It's one of only three shopping weekends left before the big day.
So much for kicking back. Just be careful out there, and stop and hear the music.
Should you happen to drive past The Daily News during your weekend, be sure to check out our front window. Some of the elves performed a bit of Christmas magic and the results are there.
Thanks so much, gang!
