Blazers call up prospect for Tuesday night's game in Brandon

The Kamloops Blazers have called up 15-year-old forward Jermaine Loewen for Tuesday night’s WHL game in Brandon.

Loewen, who is from Arborg, Man., was selected by the Blazers in the third round of the 2013 bantam draft. According to a news release, he will be a game-time decision for tonight’s game against the host Wheat Kings.

After the game, he will be returned to the midget AAA Interlake Lightning, who play out of Stonewall, which is about 20 minutes north of Winnipeg. Loewen has eight points, including five goals, with the Lightning.

Tuesday night’s game will be the first on a six-game trip on which the Blazers will play every team in the WHL’s East Division.

The Blazers, who have tied a team record with 12 straight losses, will play the Pats in Regina on Wednesday, before playing three games in three nights on the weekend.

Kamloops will be in Prince Albert to play the Raiders on Friday, in Saskatoon for a Saturday matchup with the Blades, and in Moose Jaw on Sunday to meet the Warriors.

The trip will end Dec. 17 against the Broncos in Swift Current, which will be the team’s last game before Christmas.

The Blazers will be without forward Joe Kornelsen (head) and goaltender Bolton Pouliot (hand), who are injured. Defenceman Jordan Thomson, who left the team last month for personal reasons, remains out of the lineup. Head coach Dave Hunchak said the team has had no discussions with the 17-year-old Thomson, who is from Wawanesa, which is about 40 minutes southeast of Brandon.

The news is better for the Wheat Kings, who will get back leading scorer Jayce Hawryluk, who was suspended for the last two games for a hit on Regina Pats captain Kyle Burroughs in a Wednesday game. Hawryluk, who has 33 points in 29 games, has eight points in his last three games.
