CP Rail beat Coun. Nelly Dever to the punch in requesting a meeting for both sides to sit down and discuss issues of concern.
Dever noted Tuesday that a train went through town without covers on its coal cars.
Mayor Peter Milobar said his understanding is that cars don't need to be tarped if they are sprayed with a coating that keeps the coal hard enough that it doesn't fly off.
However, the coating does break down and if people are getting coal dust, they should contact the train company, he said.
Coun. Nancy Bepple suggested writing the rail companies to discuss regulations and other issues.
Milobar said he heard from CP earlier this fall with an offer to meet this month to go over protocols. The explosion disaster at Lac Mégantic in July prompted the offer.
However, that contact person has just retired and plans will have to be made with a new representative.
It there aren't any pressing issues, there is no particular rush to setting up the meeting, Milobar added.
The meeting offer will be extended to CN Rail.
