There isn't much better than waking up to an email from Jim Doan, the sensei at the Western Karate Academy.
Such was the case on Wednesday. And, as usual, the note was full of good news for The Daily News Christmas Cheer Fund.
If you have been following along, you will be aware that Jim and his students are among your Christmas Cheer Fund's strongest supporters, having raised more than $43,000 going into this festive season.
Now comes word that this year's figure will be somewhere north of 10 grand.
"Thanks to strong sales of T-shirts and other donated items," Jim writes, "our contribution to the Cheer Fund will be more than $10,000. We still have a week to collect, and that number will only go up."
As has been mentioned here before, our elves love Doan because he rolls all the change and brings in a cheque. But don't think for a minute that Doan doesn't have any fun.
"I also had a lot of fun giving away about $1,500 in prizes from community sponsors," he notes, "to 15 students who raised the most money at the Kick-A-Thon."
He closes with: "I'll keep you posted."
I can hardly wait.

You will recall that earlier in this campaign we heard from Snuffy the Seal. Well, it turns out that Snuffy has a pal and we heard from him Wednesday.
Teddy the Wonder Lizard came through with a donation and a little extra something that was spread around the night-side crew in these parts.
Teddy, you're wonderful. Have a Merry Christmas!
Hey, Rudolph, over to you!
Thanks, too, to the social club at the Hudson's Bay Company store in Aberdeen Mall. Here's hoping you all have a wonderful Christmas season.

Your Christmas Cheer Fund has never been about numbers, not in 2002 when our first year here produced $21,891.37, and not in 2012 when $101,261.30 made its way into our coffers.
Still, it's worth noting when the fund moves past a milestone, which is what happened earlier this week.
I was remiss in not noticing it at the time, but your fund surpassed $600,000 this week.
Including Today's Cheer, you, dear readers, have provided your Christmas Cheer Fund with $605,818.99.
So please take a bow and pat yourselves on the back. Well done!

Every penny that comes in ends up in the hands of local charities because The Daily News covers all administrative costs. The charities sharing in the fund this year are the Kamloops Food Bank, the Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Memorial Hospice Home, the New Life Mission, the Kamloops United Church's PIT Stop program, and the YMCA-YWCA Y Women's Shelter.
To make a donation, stop by our office at 393 Seymour St., or clip one of the Christmas Cheer Fund coupons that appear in his newspaper.
