Canadiens scout remembers mentors through Cheer

The history of hockey goes back a long, long time.

In that history, one player has won a world championship and a Stanley Cup title in the same season.

That man, Connie Broden, is being remembered in The Daily News Christmas Cheer Fund today, along with Wayne Fleming.

“Please accept this small contribution to your Christmas Cheer Fund in memory of two of my mentors — Wayne Fleming and Connie Broden,” writes Vaughn Karpan, a pro scout for the Montreal Canadiens, who works out of Langley.

Broden, who died on Nov. 23 at the age of 81, played only six regular-season and seven NHL playoff games. But he was a part of the Canadiens’ Stanley Cup-winning teams of 1957 and ’58.

In 1958, he also played for the Whitby Dunlops, who won the world championship in Oslo, Norway, beating the Soviet Union 4-2 in the final game.

Fleming, who died March 25 at the age of 62, was a longtime hockey coach who was incredibly popular among his peers.

Fleming was born in Snow Lake, Man. Karpan is from The Pas, Man. I was born and raised in northern Manitoba. Yes, it’s great to add a true north flavour to your Christmas Cheer Fund.

Please allow me to offer up an apology to June and Ken Wallin, who climbed on board with us earlier this week. When listing their donation, I inadvertently dropped Ken’s name.

Sorry about that, folks. Thanks for your help and may you have a grand festive season.

Speaking of grand festive seasons, thanks so much to the gang at Dearborn Ford. You can bet your donation had the elves singing Thursday. Merry Christmas to all of you!

Helen and Mike McBride, who are here every year, send along a note to “all the staff at the Kamloops Daily News.”

“Thank you for doing this for our community,” they write.

Judy and Geoff Gibbard sent along this to “Gregg and all the wonderful elves.”

“Once again, we say thank you for all that you are doing for the community. Merry Christmas and best wishes for 2014.”

And there is this from Verne and Phil Churchill: “Thanks for doing your annual great service for those in need in the area. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all of you.”

Thanks, folks, but you’ve got it all wrong. This is your fund. We are just here as the conduit that takes your money and gets it to those who really can use it.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all of you, and thanks for taking us past 30 grand!

The top bid for the Krazyboy leather jacket that is up for grabs here is at $510.

As he did a year ago, Leroy (Krazyboy) Connell has donated a limited edition leather jacket that, he tells us, normally retails for about $800.

We are taking bids on this beauty — the winner will pick out the proper size and Leroy will embroider a name, nickname or company name onto it — until Friday, Dec. 20, at 3 p.m.

Feel free to visit and check things out.

To get in on the bidding, call our front desk (250-372-2331) or stop by our office at 393 Seymour St. The deadline is Friday, Dec. 20, at 3 p.m.

This year’s Christmas Cheer Fund will be shared equally by five local charities —the Kamloops Food Bank, the Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Memorial Hospice Home, the New Life Mission, the Kamloops United Church's PIT Stop program, and the YMCA-YWCA Y Women's Shelter.

If you would like to get in on the fun we are having, come on down to our office at 393 Seymour St., and meet the elves. Or use one of the handy, dandy Christmas Cheer Fund coupons that are in this newspaper.
