Basketball: City bragging rights on line at Fulton Cup

Thirteen games are on the schedule today as the Fulton Cup preseason city basketball championship opens at the Tournament Capital Centre and TRU Gym.

The Fulton Cup, heading into its 14th year, brings together the city’s junior and senior teams for a three-day tournament. This year’s event will continue through Thursday before wrapping up Friday.

With 26 teams in the draw — six in each of the senior boys and girls divisions, six in junior girls and eight in junior boys — there will be plenty of action at both venues.

The first game, scheduled for 2 p.m., at the TCC, will pit the Sa-Hali Sabres and NorKam Saints in a senior girls battle. Other games will follow at 3:30, 3:45, 5, 5:15, 6:45, 7, 8:15 and 8:30 p.m.

The South Kamloops Titans are looking to again sweep the junior tournaments. South Kam’s junior girls are scheduled to open with two games today — against the St. Ann’s Crusaders at 3:30 p.m. (TCC) and the Valleyview Vikings at 8:30 p.m. (TRU).

There are two South Kam junior boys teams — the silver team will play a quarterfinal against Valleyview at 3:45 at the TCC, before the Titans’ gold team takes on the Sabres at 5:15 p.m., at the TCC.

The senior draws are expected to be tight. The senior girls will open with three games — along with the NorKam-Sa-Hali meeting, South Kam will play the Westsyde Whundas (5:15 p.m., TRU) and the Saints will meet the Vikings (8:15 p.m., TCC). The Titans won the tournament in 2012.

The best battle could be in the senior boys division, which opens with South Kam and defending-champion Valleyview playing at TRU at 3:30 p.m. Also on the schedule today is a meeting between the Crusaders and Whundas (5 p.m., TCC), and another featuring South Kam and Sa-Hali (8:15 p.m., TCC).
