81-year-old man dies in crash on Coquihalla

Failure to wear a seatbelt a factor, police say

An 81-year-old man died Wednesday afternoon when he was ejected from his vehicle in a crash on the Coquihalla Highway.

He was headed south about five kilometres north of Mine Creek Road when he lost control and left the road, RCMP Cpl. Tim Lyons said.

The vehicle crossed the centre median and northbound lanes before rolling down an embankment.

The lone occupant was pronounced dead at the scene.

Roads in the area were icy and covered with snow.

"It appears that speed relative to conditions and failure to wear a seatbelt are causal factors to this incident," Lyons said.
