Perfect time to give to Kamloops Foundation

'By giving to the Kamloops Foundation, you’re supporting a whole community initiative'

Nancy Plett

‘Tis the season of holiday cheer, goodwill and giving, which means it’s a perfect time to contribute to the Kamloops Foundation.

“When people think of giving and giving that will last a long time, the Kamloops Foundation is in the business of legacy building,” said Nancy Plett, the foundation’s development officer.

Plett wants people to also know that donations made until Dec. 31 contribute toward their 2013 income-tax charitable deduction, making it an ideal time to give, Plett said Wednesday.

“We build legacies and we help support different kinds of interests,” she said. “By giving to the Kamloops Foundation, you’re supporting a whole community initiative.”

Things were slow to start for the foundation, but momentum picked up as word about what the organization does spread through the region, she said.

Now in its 30th year, the Kamloops Foundation has contributed $4.2 million to a variety of charities, scholarships, community funds, bursaries and causes, Plett said.

“Over 30 years, we’ve given out over hundreds of thousands of dollars and we want people to know that the money you invest continues to give forever,” she said.

Those legacies include clothing for the Kamloops Central Business Improvement Association’s ambassador program and donations to Hope Air, which flies people with medical issues to Vancouver who can’t otherwise afford the flight.

“We support sports, we support medical issues, we support the homeless,” said Plett. “We do all of it.”

Despite the name, the Kamloops Foundation doesn’t just help local causes. Plett said the organization also serves Ashcroft, Barriere, Chase, Clearwater, Cache Creek and other surrounding communities.
