Music to highlight busy season at Harper

An added musical touch is the only way that the owners at Harper Mountain believe it can improve upon an already excellent ski season.

"Everyone is so excited," said snow sports manager Lisa Daburger.

Daburger wanted to launch a night of acoustic music last season but the plan never came together.

The stars have finally aligned, she said. Brooke and Corey kick off the series of performances Saturday at about 7 p.m.

Daburger said a different act is featured each Thursday, Friday or Saturday night in the ski lodge until the end of the season.

"And it's free," she said. "It's for people who are hanging out, skiing and tubing, who want to come into the lodge and hang out and listen."

She encourages people to check for a list of performers.

As for conditions, the mountain had a 72-centimetre base heading into Christmas and nine centimetres of new snow. Although Daburger doesn't have an official tally, business is up this December.

Snow is the key, not only on the mountain, but down in the valley, she said.

"People see snow and then they know it's going to at least be decent up here," said Daburger.

Harper Mountain is open every day through New Year's Day for skiing and tubing.

The news is equally as good at Sun Peaks Resort, where attendance is up 12 per cent this month compared to last year. Tourism Sun Peaks president Christopher Nicolson said this bodes well for the rest of December, and possibly the season.

Given that Christmas and New Year's Day falls mid-week, the resort experiences three waves of guests this year; the pre-Christmas rush, the Christmas crowd and then New Year's Eve revellers, he said.

Nicolson said the resort's growing reputation as a ski-team training ground contributes to the strong numbers.
