A pair of abandoned vehicles and signs of a fire on a Stake Lake cross-country ski trail provided a New Year’s Day surprise for members of the Overlander Ski Club.
A notice about the vehicles was posted on the club’s website when the Ford Explorer and Volkswagen Golf were found Wednesday morning. Theo Seal, an employee at Stake Lake, said RCMP were alerted.
Seal said the Ford Explorer’s battery died either before or after the driver had a party and a bonfire on the trail. The driver phoned his girlfriend, who drove onto Little Joe in her Volkswagen to get him.
The couple walked out when her car become stuck. Seal said they returned to Stake Lake on Wednesday and told staff what happened.
Arrangements were made Wednesday afternoon to get the vehicles off the trail, said Seal.
