KIBIHT: Blazers open with victory; Raiders edged by NSWC

The Jardine’s Blazers got the 46th edition of KIBIHT off to a successful start on Wednesday, beating the Alaska Aces 6-2 at the McArthur Island Sport and Event Centre.

Max Patterson led the Blazers with two goals and two assists, while Tyler Ward and Brendan Semchuk each had a goal and two helpers.

Matthew Facchinelli and Brendan Mongey also scored for the locals. Davis Offord and Joshua Boyer replied for the Aces, who trailed 2-1 and 4-1 by period.

Jakob Walter got the goaltending decision over Eric Yancey.

The Blazers are scheduled to meet the Victoria Racquet Club Thursday, 3 p.m., at McArthur Island and then are to play the Calgary Northstars on Friday, 12:30 p.m., at Interior Savings Centre.

In other Tier 1 (Randy Lindros Division) games, the Kelowna Rockets dropped the Cloverdale Colts 7-2, the OHA Red blanked the Vancouver T-Birds 5-0, and the Airdrie Xtreme defeated the Juan de Fuca Grizzlies, 7-2. The Langley Eagles were playing POE No. 1, while the Northstars and Victoria were meeting in last night’s late game with results not available by press time.

Jeremy Hite led the Rockets with two goals and two assists, while Keltie Jeri-Leon and Jeffrey Karpowich also scored twice. Hayden Courtney drew three assists. Josh Arnold had two goals for the Colts.

OHA Red got shutout goaltending from Jordan Hollett, while Ethan O’Rourke chipped in two goals.

Cody Gibson scored three times and added an assist for Airdrie, which got four assists from each of Gary Haden and Brent Trentham.

In Tier 2 (Kamloops Hotel Division) play, the Player’s Bench Raiders opened with a 6-5 loss to the North Shore Winter Club.

Liam Kindree gave NSWC a 6-4 lead with 3:53 left in the third period, the goal coming just 40 seconds after Garrett Kellington had pulled the Raiders into a 4-4 tie.
Kellington later got his side to within one when he scored with 43 seconds to play in the game.

Connor Rutledge and Ben Landon each scored twice for the winners. Mike Van Unen also had two goals for the Raiders, who had Reid Gladman in goal.

The Raiders are back on the ice today, 2:30 p.m., against Seattle at ISC and will meet the Sherwood Park Leafs on Friday, 7:30 a.m., at McArthur Island.

Also in Tier 2, the Vernon Vipers, with Matthew Kowalski scoring twice, beat POE 4-3; the Williams Lake Timberwolves got a goal and two assists from Cody Swan as they edged the North Delta Sun Devils 5-4, who got two goals and an assist from Tanner Hopps; the Vancouver T-Birds got four goals from Danny Pearson and four assists from Harrison Siemens as they dumped the Spokane Jr. Chiefs 7-2; Jayce Schweizer had a goal and two assists to lead the Prince George Cougars past the Salmon Arm Silvertips 5-1; and the Penticton Vees got two goals from Raphael Bassot and shutout goaltending from Matts Bratton as they dumped the Kelowna Rockets, 4-0.

In late games, the Mission Stars were playing the OHA Black, while Sherwood Park was facing Seattle.
