Douglas Lake Ranch has announced the purchase of the Quilchena Cattle Company, which includes the historic hotel and restaurant in Quilchena — a community on Nicola Lake east of Merritt.
Douglas Lake has the distinction of being Canada's largest working cattle ranch with more than half a million acres of protected and managed land mass. But it is also a mecca for fly fishing, with accommodation for outdoor enthusiasts in cabins, campsites and RV sites.
Quilchena Cattle Company, a working cattle ranch on 28,000 deeded acres, is known for its 15-room hotel dating back to 1908. There is also a restaurant, general store, nine-hole golf course and RV park at the site.
No purchase price has been released, but Joe Gardiner of the Douglas Lake Ranch says it’s an historic event between two large neighbours who have been operating since the 1880s.
The Quilchena Ranch was acquired by French-born Joseph Guichon in the latter part of the 19th century.
Gardiner says the Quilchena Hotel, golf course, store and RV park will all retain their names.
