Woman dies in highway crash south of Merritt

An 85-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene Wednesday morning when an out-of-control truck slammed into an SUV on Highway 5 near Merritt, police said.

An unloaded commercial unit was heading north at 9 a.m. about 52 kilometres south of Merritt when the driver lost control.

The truck crossed the centre median and went into southbound lanes, where it hit the SUV head-on.

The 86-year-old driver suffered serious injuries and was transported by air ambulance. An 85-year-old passenger died.

The truck driver suffered minor injuries.
