Alleged cat strangler trial set for two days

A two-day trial is scheduled this month to hear allegations that a Kamloops man strangled his cat and threw its lifeless body in a dumpster.

Steven Seidel faces a single charge under the Criminal Code and two others under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.

A pre-trial conference was held Friday to confirm the March 18 trial date.

Prosecutor Chris Balison said witnesses will include a veterinarian who will who give expert evidence detailing injuries and cause of death of the black and white cat named Oreo.

The Crown’s witnesses are also expected to include Seidel’s girlfriend.

Defence lawyer Ken Tessovitch declined to state Friday if he intends to call defence witnesses. The Crown’s case is expected to take less than a day and Tessovitch asked for two days of time in provincial court.

A petition on a website asking for “justice for Oreo” has garnered nearly 32,000 signatures.

None of the allegations have been proven or heard in court.
