Britain set target of 10 medals at European Championships to stay on track for London 2012

LONDON - British track and field athletes have been set a target of at least 10 medals at this year's European Championships to keep the country on track for fourth place at the London 2012 Olympics.

Funding body UK Sport wants Britain to finish fourth in the medal table for a second straight Summer Games and says athletes could win as many as 15 at the July 26-Aug. 1 European Championships in Barcelona.

UK Sport chief executive John Steele acknowledges the target is "challenging" but that reaching the halfway point between the 2008 Beijing Games and London 2012 will "sharpen the mind even more."

UK Sport expects British swimmers to win 35 medals at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi in October.
