Via Rail uses buses in Gaspe region until area bridge repaired, network checked

MONTREAL - Via Rail says it will use buses to carry its passengers on the Matapedia leg of the route between Montreal and the Gaspe region in eastern Quebec because of bridge repairs.

Inspections carried out on the Grand-Pabos bridge in Chandler, Que., last week revealed damage to one of its pillars and passengers have been put on buses for the New Carlisle part of the trip since then.

Via said Thursday it decided to expand the use of the buses when it learned more repairs would be needed for the Grand-Pabos bridge, raising concerns about other infrastructure in the area.

The carrier said it will resume rail passenger regular service when it gets assurances from engineers that the Gaspe Peninsula rail network is reliable.
