Nova Scotia to regulate cellphone contracts from hidden fees and price jumps

HALIFAX - Cellphone cancellation fees in Nova Scotia would be capped at $50 under proposed legislation that would allow the province to regulate cellphone contracts.

Service Nova Scotia Minister John MacDonell says amendments to the province's Consumer Protection Act would also require companies to provide minimum monthly costs of service in contracts and advertising.

MacDonell says the changes would also require companies to inform customers of contract changes that would increase their bills.

He says the legislation is intended to better protect consumers from hidden fees.

Earlier this month, Ontario announced it bring in similar legislation and Quebec already has such a law.
