Driver identified after fiery crash near Hope, B.C., reduces truck to ashes

HOPE, B.C. - A 44-year-old Nanaimo man has been identified as the victim of the fiery crash on Highway 5 near Hope, B.C.

RCMP had asked for help identifying the victim because the blaze was so intense that it was almost impossible to determine the type of pickup truck or whether more than one person was in the cab.

Investigators now say dental records have been used to identify the man, but his name is not immediately being released.

He was alone in the truck.

The crash occurred early Sunday morning when the pickup veered off Highway 5 and slammed into a concrete pillar.

A cause is still unknown but police say road or weather conditions likely did not play a part.
