MDA to supply communications payload for Israeli satellite in $90M-plus contract

RICHMOND, B.C. - Space and satellite technology company MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates Ltd. (TSX:MDA) has been awarded a $90-million-plus contract by Israel Aerospace Industries Ltd.

British Columbia-based MDA said on the weekend that it has been chosen to supply the communications payload for the AMOS-6 satellite to be launched in 2014.

The contract, in excess of $90 million, is expected to be finalized over the coming month and MDA has already started work on the project.

Once launched, AMOS-6 will enhance the capacity of the existing AMOS satellite constellation, owned and operated by Spacecom, Israel's satellite communications service provider.

The constellation provides a large range of fixed and mobile communication services in the Middle East, central and eastern Europe, Central Asia, and Africa.

MDA, perhaps best known as developer of the Canadarm used on the International Space Station and the space shuttle, provides advanced, space-based information solutions that capture and process vast amounts of data for business and government organizations worldwide.
