China promises to handle US auto complaint 'properly,' says it doesn't want to hurt ties

BEIJING, China - China's government says it will "properly handle" a U.S. complaint to the World Trade Organization about its duties on auto imports and says it doesn't want the dispute to harm relations.

The U.S. case filed Thursday is the latest in a string of disputes between Beijing and Washington over access to each other's markets for goods ranging from poultry to steel pipes.

A Chinese foreign ministry spokesman said Friday the "important thing" is to handle the dispute and "not let it impede friendly relations."
