January is a month of literacy.

On its last day of publication Saturday, the Kamloops Daily News is putting out a supplement mapping out free events and activities for Interior Savings Unplug and Play Family Literacy Week taking place Jan. 20 to 27.

The events aren't all about reading - they include swimming, skating, dancing and games night - the event is about families connecting and playing together.

Of course, literacy is the focus of the week, so it ends with the annual Heap the Honda children's book drive, where new or like-new children's books are donated at Kamloops Honda, the TNRD libraries, Interior Savings branches, the Tournament Capital Centre, Westsyde pool or the Henry Grube Education Centre library.

The literacy committee is collecting books at the Jan. 22 Blazers game, too.

The partners involved in this effort are Literacy in Kamloops (LinK), the City of Kamloops, School District 73, The Daily News, KELLI and other organizations.

On Jan. 25, the eighth annual ABC Family Literacy Day is being held at Henry Grube from 9 a.m. to noon. Free family activities are available and all children who attend get a free book.
