Calls from 'the police' asking for donations are a scam

No, "the police" are not phoning Kamloops residents to ask for donations.

Someone is phoning around town asking for money to cover the cost of having officers attend schools to educate children on how to keep safe from sexual predators, Staff Sgt. Grant Learned said Wednesday.

It's a scam.

"The RCMP do not solicit funds by way of telephone calls. RCMP school liaison programs are internally funded and are not subject to solicitation campaigns to maintain their viability," Learned said.

The caller does not identify a police agency by name or location, suggesting only that he is calling on behalf of "the police."

This fraudulent practice comes up from time to time around B.C., Learned noted.
