We are on the doorstep of a milestone here at The Daily News Christmas Cheer Fund.

When this fund first operated in the festive season of 2002, who could have guessed that the day would come when we would have passed along more than half-a-million dollars to local charities?

And yet that's where we are as the sun rises today. We are knocking on the door.

At some point today, we will surpass $500,000. The total for this year surpassed $22,000 on Monday, giving us an overall total of $499,263.68.

And that simply is out of sight. So as you drink your first cup of tea or coffee this morning, raise a toast to yourself. You have been marvellous, you really have.

We had another grand day yesterday - in fact, it was better than a five grand day - and who can ask for anything more than that.

On Friday night, Freda Brown slipped me a Christmas card and a donation from the volunteers who work at Kamloops Blazers' home games. Merry Christmas to y'all and we'll see you on Dec. 29.

Shirley Brown is back with us, and so are June and Ken Wallin, and Brenda and Ken Christian. It is so wonderful that so many people take the time to make a donation year after year, and I can tell you that it means so much to the charities that benefit from the fund.

As Amy Regen noted as she made a donation, she is "happy to help out these local organizations in a small way."

Let's not forget that we have a couple of things available via auction.

For starters, there is a Krazyboy Limited Edition/Signature Series leather jacket, courtesy of Leroy Cornell in Barnhartvale. This jacket - it's a size large - is available for viewing in our editorial department.

We will take bids on this jacket by phone (250-372-2331) or in person at our front desk at 393 Seymour St. The minimum bid is $300 and the deadline is Thursday, Dec. 20, at 3 p.m.

As well, Jim Doan of the Western Karate Academy has an authentic Chuck Norris autograph available. The high bid continues to be $110. Feel free to email and take it higher.

And remember that the Black Eyed Peas were known as The Peas before they met Chuck Norris.

This is our 11th festive season doing this and all proceeds will be shared by five local charities - the Kamloops Food Bank, Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Memorial Hospice Home, New Life Mission, Pregnancy Care Centre of Kamloops and YMCA-YWCA Y Women's Emergency Shelter.

You may donate by using one of the coupons that is in this newspaper, or by dropping by our office at 393 Seymour St. Just walk in the front door and look for a smiling elf - they are the ones who keep this project moving.
